MY SCOOBY

My little Scooby died today on February 4th around 3:45 in the afternoon. We noticed over the last month that his stomach looked bloated or enlarged and he had difficulty breathing. My wife took him to an emergency clinic over the weekend and they indicated he was in the final stages of heart failure. They said they could try to do more testing or treatment but it would involve leaving him there and of course there is no guarantee he would improve or survive. I wanted him brought home to live out his final days, weeks, or moments with us. As I worked on school assignments in the Office on this Thursday afternoon, I noticed Scooby making his way in to the room. He was breathing hard and I had a sense of knowing it was time. I carried him up to our bedroom and laid him on our bed. I held him and talked to him letting him know it was okay to go on so he wouldn’t be in any more pain. As I held him closely in my arms, he took his last breath. I caressed his shiny coat as he passed on to what I hope is a much better place. I hope he is able to be with all of my other animals that have passed on especially my little Buster.

This has been such an emotional day as I called my wife to give her the news at work about Scooby. I had to tell the girls as they were coming home from school. We took Scooby to the vet and made arrangements for him to be cremated. We said our final goodbyes to him in the vet’s office. I don’t think I have seen all of us cry so much as that moment. Scooby had such an impact on us as he was a part of our lives for thirteen and a half years. I remember Scooby from being a young puppy when he would hump a big, huge dog stuffed animal that my oldest daughter had as a toy. When we moved out of our apartment into our new home, we took this stuffed animal to the garbage dumpster. All I can remember is a lady running up to me wanting the stuffed animal for her son. As much as I wanted to, I couldn’t tell her that our puppy Scooby Doo had defiled this dog so I watched as she happily took the stuffed animal into her car for her son.

After losing his stuffed animal, Scooby came to love blankets. He loved to hump blankets. He would hump them all day, every day. Sometimes he even went for a soft hat, scarf, or coat. Many times when we would return home, Scooby had this look on his face that he had been caught in the act of humping as when a parent might walk in on their teenager masturbating. There have been so many more hilarious Scooby moments such as one friend who used to come to visit only to have Scooby so excited he would pee all over his leg. Needless to say, this friend stopped coming by after a few times of this happening. I remember one almost tragic incident when my wife was pregnant with our twin girls. She went to pick up take out from a nearby restaurant with our oldest daughter and Scooby. She went to get out of the car and Scooby went dashing out running towards a busy intersection. My wife went running after him then tripped and fell. Luckily, a passerby managed to grab Scooby before he reached the intersection and come to my wife's aid in the process. Fortunately, my wife, our baby girls, and Scooby were all fine after this traumatic experience.

With all of this thinking about who we call “Man’s Best Friend” I can certainly say there is no better friend than what a pet can provide. For some, it is a cat, a rabbit or some other furry little creature. For me, it has always been dogs. I’ve had many different breeds of dogs throughout the years however; I have incredible memories of the Dalmatian, Pockets I grew up with for most of my youth. I remember Buster, the Boston Terrier, who was the first dog I bought for myself as an adult. And now Scooby, the first dog we bought for our oldest daughter's third birthday. A friend is there for you no matter what. You may have even been in a bad mood about something else but your friend is there for you. You may have come home to a mess your friend made but your friend is still there. You may have disciplined your friend for something they did but your friend is still there for you unconditionally. I’m taking time to remember my beloved friends including Pockets, Buster, and my most recent friend to depart, Scooby. I will cherish every moment of Scooby and laugh every time I think of him with the stuffed animal, coats, scarves, hats, or any soft blankies in his reach.
