AMADEUS - EDITING
Academy Award winning Film Editors Michael Chandler and Nena Danevic combine many styles of editing including classical cutting, sequence shots, and cutting to continuity in Milos Foreman’s film version of Amadeus. Chandler and Danevic primarily use flashbacks to tell the story of Antonio Salieri, played by Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, played by Oscar nominee Tom Hulce. Salieri recounts his story to a young priest after he has attempted suicide for his confession of murdering Mozart. Throughout the film, Chandler and Danevic use two shots, reaction shots, and close ups of the actors particularly when Salieri and Mozart are on screen together. The reaction and close up shots are especially effective with Salieri’s admiration of Mozart which later turns to hatred of the young composer. Chandler and Danevic’s collaborative efforts with Foreman have made Amadeus a visual masterpiece.
