BLADE RUNNER - COSTUME
In Ridley Scott’s film, Blade Runner, costume design is not what you first notice in this beautifully filmed futuristic thriller. Since the film was released in 1982 and set in Los Angeles 2019, it is interesting to see the costume choices that designers Michael Kaplan and Charles Knode created for the characters. When our film’s hero, Deckard (Harrison Ford) meets Rachael (Sean Young) she is reminiscent of a classic Hollywood femme fatale complete with her 1940’s film noir black wardrobe and finely coifed vintage hair. As the drama unfolds and her relationship with Deckard develops, Rachael is transformed with a softer, contemporary look by letting her hair down and choosing lighter colors in her clothing. As a replicant, Rachael has no memories of her own so her identity is not defined by her style choices. Her wardrobe is her interpretation of what would be acceptable in human form. The costumes of the characters enhance the story and drama of Blade Runner.
