THE LONG WALK HOME

THE LONG WALK HOME - A Journey Worth Taking

The Long Walk Home is a wonderful film inspired by Rosa Parks, a black woman who refused to give up her seat to a white man. the incident led to the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott in 1955.

The film stars Sissy Spacek as southern housewife, Miriam Thompson and Whoopi Goldberg as her quietly dignified maid, Odessa Cotter. Thompson sends her days planning dinner parties while Cotter must walk miles to work to care for Thompson's family, then walk home to care for her own.

Thompson realizes the changes in Montgomery and decides to take a stand. She rebels against her racist husband and friends by driving her maid to work. She also assists in carpooling other blacks to and from work during the protests of segregation.

The only negative aspects of the film are one, the length - being only 90 minutes made the story seem rushed and more should have been covered from this crucial moment in our social history. Secondly, I could have done without the narration in the film. It is told by Spacek's youngest daughter as an adult and serves no purpose except being an annoyance while watching the film.

Otherwise, the film makes an enjoyable trip to the movies especially with the heartfelt performances given by Sissy Spacek and Whoopi Goldberg.
