THELMA AND LOUISE - 1991

THELMA AND LOUISE - AN INSPIRATIONAL VOYAGE OF SELF DISCOVERY

Thelma and Louise is a powerful new film by Director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner) which takes a serious look at women while being disguised as a rip roaring action packed road trip. While it wallows in clithes, women are the center of the action in a way we've never seen them before. This brings an originality to the film and makes it it's own.

Thelma (Geena Davis), is a wacky Arkansas housewife who spends her days pleasing her chauvinistic salesman husband, Darryl (Christopher McDonald) while Louise (Susan Sarandon) is a strong willed waitress who appears to have everything under control - except her boyfriend who can't handle commitment.

Without asking Darryl, Thelma agrees to go on a weekend fishing trip with Louise. Thelma grabs several suitcases full of clothes along with Darryl's pistol and heads off with Louise to finally have some fun.

Before reaching their destination, Thelma begs Louise to stop off at a roadhouse to kick back and relax. After downing several drinks and beginning to feel mighty fine, Thelma dances with a local Romeo. The tough hearted Louise is hesitant about her friend's dance partner and rightfully so when she finds the guy beating and trying to rape Thelma in the parking lot. In a moment of desperation, anger, and frustration, Louise blows this low life away so that he will not be a threat to anyone else again. From this scene, we feel that Louise has been in a similar position before and has been pushed too far this time.

Because of these violent circumstances, Thelma and Louise become outlaws and plan to start a new life in Mexico. Along the way, they meet up with a variety of men who force them to expose the blight of this male dominated sexist world in which we live in. One of these men is JD, a hitchhiking hunk who shows Thelma the art of armed robbery. JD then robs the women of all their money. At this point, Louise begins to crumble after being the strength of the duo for the first half of the film. Thelma refuses to give up now so she picks up Louise and they continue in their quest for freedom.

In need of some cash, Thelma holds up a convenient store using the JD method. Thelma learns to express herself through her criminal actions ad realizes there's no turning back for her now. Louise also comes to terms with the reality of the world we live in and not being able to go back to her old life. She knows that the police will never believe the truth - she acted in self defense of herself and Thelma.

Before reaching the film's breathtaking climax, Thelma and Louise realize that they are finally in the place that they've been unconsciously striving to be in for years - to be in control of their own lives and their own destiny.

Scott creates a slick, stylish look throughout the film with spectacular visuals of the Canyons and Desert. Sarandon and Davis prove to be absolutely stunning in their portrayals and demonstrate what award caliber performances are made of and I expect both to be nominated for Academy Awards next year for their brilliant performances.

So if you are ready for some action this summer or just a plain good old time then jump on into see Thelma and Louise and old on for the ride of your life.
