ADAM LAMBERT - DISCRIMINATION

There is such a controversy over the performance Adam Lambert gave at the American Music Awards on Sunday, November 22, 2009. Perhaps, Lambert should have saved his racy and sexually suggestive performance for his concert tour. However, as Lambert displayed on American Idol, he is anything but an explosive, alternative rock god of a performer full of charm and charisma. He is not a "safe" performer, he is one to take risks and push the envelope. Lambert has stated he felt he was discriminated against because he is a gay man. He further suggested the images we see of gay males are pretty cliche. I have to agree that the images we see are of the stereotypical comic relief gay sidekick or the over the top feminine gay male. Where are all the husky and rugged male detectives and action heroes? As a society we readily accept two women in a lesbian sexual act more often than accepting two men in the same act. The majority of society deems this repulsive, disgusting, and an abomination.

I experienced this first hand recently when I attended a marching band award night ceremony at my daughter's high school. During a portion of the ceremony, awards were handed out to the most improved members of the band. There were two younger boys that you could visibly see were close friends. Their parents signaled for these two buddies to stand next to one another to get their picture together. One of the boys was very excited with his award and his acknowledgement. During the taking of the picture, he kissed his friend. This was just a simple peck on the cheek amongst friends no more and no less. I honestly thought there was going to be a riot due to the immediate boos and hisses and the thunderous amount of gasps in the audience. We live in a society that is more accepting of gun violence than two people of the same sex showing love, affection, or admiration for one other.

My wish is for people to think of the following words then consider what type of world they want to live in? Let's strip off all the labels and live as independent individuals. No more being defined as a man or a woman, gay or straight, black or white, republican or democrat. Let's stop putting stipulations on human behavior. Do not judge the world on your moral compass. Must we continue to build people up then only to tear them down? We need to realize we are all human beings capable of doing good and bad - we are flawed individuals. Let's live as one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all.

"I pledge alliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
