CALIFORNIA
When I was a child I fantasized about California. I enjoyed all aspects of the Entertainment Industry so I was drawn to California. I loved movies, music, and television. I knew that music artists recorded their music in California. I knew many actors filmed their movies and television shows there also. I knew much of the Entertainment Industry worked in New York too but somehow I wasn’t as interested in New York as I was with California. I chalk it up to the cold weather we had in Ohio. I figured why would I move to New York when I already experienced the cold in Ohio?
When I was 13 I traveled to California to attend my cousin’s high school graduation. When I felt the warm weather, glared at the palm tree lined streets, and visited all the touristy spots, I felt as if I was home. I knew I wanted to live there someday. I always enjoyed my time visiting California every summer that I could travel there. I remember going to Melrose Ave to check out some of the trendy shops, touring the Hollywood Walk of Fame looking at all the celebrity’s stars, and going to theme parks like Universal Studios and Disneyland. I thought California was such a magical place.
In 1992, when I was 25, I relocated from Ohio to California to live permanently. I saw my vision as a young child complete. I soon realized that visiting California while on vacation was much different than living in California fulltime. I had to find a job and go to work. I no longer had time to visit all the fun touristy spots I had once enjoyed so much. I had to work two jobs to be able to survive in the land of luxury. I still loved living in California and being so close to some of my favorite places to visit. My favorite place is Santa Barbara with its Riviera style beaches, rich Spanish style architecture, and absolutely breathtaking views. I definitely learned a new appreciation of California with what I was able to do there in my youth as opposed to living there as a working adult. I know I took it for granted when I lived there and wasn’t able to enjoy what Los Angeles had to offer daily. I simply had to work to support myself and my family. I’m happy for the opportunities I did have to explore the city and I long to go back there again to vacation as I did in my childhood.
