ENGLISH - SELF ASSESSMENT ESSAY
As a beginner to college education until June 2009, I hadn’t taken an English class for 24 years. With Beginning Composition and now Essay and Research under my belt, I feel I have enhanced my writing skills during the course of these two classes over the last six months. I will highlight my development and where improvement is needed in this self assessment essay. I always remember this extraordinary quote by Joyce Meyer and apply it to my everyday life. I feel it is appropriate to describe my feelings on my writing ability and progress. “I may not be where I need to be but I thank God I am not where I used to be."
I have conducted extensive research for all three of my essays which included topics on Sexual Offenders, Blogging, and the Capital Area Humane Society. There were many Reading logs during this course that required reading on various subjects involving moral and ethical views in addition to political, sexual, and gender issues. This all requires coordinating time management to complete projects for specific deadlines. I believe I have been very productive in this area and have taken the initiative to have assignments turned in prior to the deadlines. I have taken the necessary time to analyze all my topics in detail and research them thoroughly.
I believe my communications skills are very strong through my writing abilities. I have established effective communication with others on our peer review teams and discussion board assignments. I have learned so much from having others to provide feedback on my work and for me to read their work to see other points of view in life. I respect other individual’s perspective and enjoy discussing opposing opinions on issues. It is so important to be open to new ideas and opportunities otherwise you cannot grow as an individual or member of society. I will definitely need to continue to improve my communication skills but I have done very well in this area to date.
I feel my weakest link has been my struggle with MLA guidelines and formatting. I know I have enhanced my sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation skills with this course. However, I realize I need to continue to strengthen my writing skills and learn all the different aspects of MLA guidelines. There were many discussion board exercises provided to test my skills with MLA. I know this gave me an opportunity to develop my MLA knowledge. I want to continue to write so I definitely want to achieve these goals for my personal growth.
With researching my essay subjects for this class, I know I learned quite a bit with each one of my topics. With my prior knowledge from working at the Capital Area Humane Society and with my research with their current programs, services, and statistics, I realized how much CAHS depends on individual and community support. The numbers continue to increase each year for abandoned pets, cruelty cases, and unwanted animals. As a community we have to do our part to help control the pet population with having our pets spayed and neutered, volunteering our time, and/or donating money to this nonprofit organization. In researching the effects of the sexual offender database registry, I became aware of the high statistics of offenders throughout the United States and specifically in Ohio. As citizens we have to become involved with this issue for the safety of our children. While researching my Blogging essay, I learned how valuable words can mean to an issue. By simply writing your opinion on an issue and posting it to a website, your words can reach millions of people. This can have a positive or negative impact on society depending on your topic of choice.
When taking a step back to examine my progress in this class, I can see my strengths and weaknesses. I have developed many techniques to enhance my writing, maintain time management, and fulfill personal growth. I am learning to identify my mistakes and improve on them. I can see the negative and turn it into a positive. I hope to continue to do this in life as well as my writing. I am excited about continuing to learn. My journey will continue and I will write about it every step of the way.
